WHAT SYMPTOMS HAVE YOU TREATED?
I can treat any acute and/or chronic pain in the body. Specific symptoms I have treated include headaches, migraines, acute and chronic lower back pain, neck pain, whiplash, bulging disc pain, sciatica, rotator cuff pathologies, gait abnormalities/deviations, scoliosis, bony misalignments, adhesions, and decreased range of motion from scar tissue, scoliosis, vertigo, and bowel and bladder problems. I also treat concussions and the related symptoms associated with head injury.
WHAT DOES A TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?
CranioSacral and myofascial work as I use it will feel comfortable and tolerable. I assess the resistance of the tissues and apply only enough pressure that is necessary to make a change. I do NOT force my way though irritated or tight tissues in attempt to make a difference. Pressure can vary from very light to very deep and will be just the right amount AND to a patient's tolerance. No one is expected to "work through" something that does not feel right to him/ her. Restrictions in the body are released through long holds, so my hands will generally stay in one area for any length of time.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON THE FIRST VISIT?
The first visit is a patient evaluation. This will consist of a therapist/patient interview regarding current conditions and general health and life patterns. Next I explain my methods. After the patient has an understanding of what I do and why I assess postural alignment. If needed, I will also check strength, range of motion, and possibly do tests that are specific to a certain area. For example, if I am seeing someone with shoulder pain, I will perform certain tests to rule in or rule out rotator cuff pathologies. I include some treatment on the first visit to see how my patient responds to the work. Lastly I will make a recommendation based on what I feel in the body and what your goals are. All patients have 4 weeks to chose to work with me or not as I do not do appointments "as needed". Everyone signs a commitment to treatment contact for an agreed upon length of time (more details below). If a choice is not made in 4 weeks and you would like to work with me you will need to be seen for another PT evaluation so I can ensure that we are starting with accurate information.
WHAT DO I WEAR?
Bring or wear loose comfortable clothes. Clothes need to be appropriate to the area being assessed- so if you are struggling with knee pain then I will recommend you bring shorts so I can easily access and examine your knee.
WILL I BE FULLY CLOTHED?
Yes. Most sessions are performed with patients fully clothed. Occasionally skin to skin contact is needed but not necessary. Can be left up to the patients comfort level.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO FEEL AFTER A VISIT?
Most people feel very relaxed immediately following treatment and sometimes light-headed. Sometimes people can be sore for a few days following treatment which can be decreased by drinking plenty of plain water (NOT tea, coffee, or soda). Sometimes people feel energized and clear. Each person's response is individual.
HOW MANY VISITS DO I NEED?
The number of sessions depends on a few factors:
- the condtion(s) being treated
- how loyal one is to sticking with any home program provided
- body's response to treatment
- your goals
Generally everyone experiences some relief on the first visit. I offer both single appointment visits and packages (4, 8, or 12 visits) which depends on all of the above. I will ask you which package feels like what you need based on your goals and current condition. I will also make a recommendation.
WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY (CST)?
CST is a gentle hands-on modality that addresses restrictions in the body in order for the nervous system to relax, allowing the body to come into alignment naturally. Anywhere in the body can be addressed, and it is not limited to the pelvis and cranium. I discuss this form of therapy in greater detail here. Additional resources can be found here.
WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL RELEASE (MFR)?
MFR is a technique used to relieve restricted areas of the body caused by tight fascia. It is hands-on and addresses cause of pain/dysfunction and can be more global than CST. Many CST and MFR techniques are related and interchangeable. I discuss this form of therapy in greater detail here.
WHAT IS FASCIA?
Fascia is connective tissue that encompasses the entire body: from head to feet and front to back. Organs, nerves, bones, muscles, vessels, are all enclosed within the fascial system. Fascia is made up of 2 types of tissue: collagen and elastin. Elastin is stretchy and collagen is tougher and will 'give' but tends to return to it's unstretched state. Collagen fibers require time and pressure for it to lengthen and stay in its new state. Think of a piece of clothing that you can stretch out and move in different directions.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE A VISIT?
This will be based on progress during physical therapy treatments as well as how effective the home program is.
WILL I BE PAIN/SYMPTOM FREE AFTER TREATMENT?
Maybe. For many chronic problems, patients will still have some residual pain, and most people are able to return to desired and normal activities while being able to manage pain with a home program I provide. Just like a diet, one must choose healthy habits on a continuous basis to maintain wellness. For patients who have acute injuries or problems that have come up more recently, many do leave after several sessions and have no symptoms. This can also occur with chronic issues for people who are relatively healthy otherwise. For people who make poor health choices whether that be diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol or tobacco use, results occur much slower and are less likely to last.
CAN I KEEP SEEING OTHER HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS?
Yes and no. Initially, in order to accurately assess causes and solutions to problems, I will need to apply only one modality. If a patient sees myself, a chiropractor, and an acupuncturist for the SAME issue, I do not know if what I am doing is helping (or not), or if a different modality is working. I believe in collaborative work since our bodies generally need more than one approach especially to address chronic problems, however this is best done in a planned out way to yield optimal results.
"Erin is the rare therapist that combines the skills of the mind with the compassion of the heart. Her touch is informed, educated and finely tuned. Listening carefully to the messages of the body’s tissues, she treats accordingly with sensitivity and deep knowing. A highly skilled therapist, she continually seeks to hone her craft: the sign of an awesome practitioner."
"I was referred to Erin after a car accident which had resulted in a bad concussion. I had headaches, dizziness, insomnia and depression as a result. I saw Erin for 8 sessions and the treatments were relaxing and wonderful and the results were amazing. I felt 100% restored as a result of my treatments. I had had persistent wrist pain for almost a year prior due to de quairvains tendinitis and as an added bonus that has completely resolved after some focused sessions as well. Erin is a talented therapist and I highly recommend her to anyone having pain, headaches, or sleep issues."
"I came to Erin hoping to find relief for a neck injury I sustained from my exercise routine. An hour and a half session left me floating on clouds, but more importantly, the irritating neck pain I had been experiencing for the past month had melted away. Also, Erin has amazing hands! She's gentle, but also has this strength that makes you feel you're in good hands. I highly recommend her services. "
